Chicago provides an ideal laboratory for experimentation in journalism, with philanthropic funding allowing journalists and their colleagues the opportunity to try out new ways of gathering news and telling stories to ensure that the city is adequately covered in an age of changing media habits.

Philadelphia is experimenting with new ways of thinking about journalism. This experiment could have an impact across the entire country. Philadelphia has become the pioneer of finding new ways to collect and distribute community information. It also helps citizens engage with their local government, and holds them accountable.

These young journalists are not only lauded for their work, but also act as mentors in Chicago and encourage collaboration. Their goal is to rewrite the narrative of Chicago while giving back its stories to its citizens.

The TRiiBE, founded in February 2017 by three Black Northwestern University alumni, aims to change the narrative surrounding their hometown. It also gives its residents back ownership of its stories. Through journalism, their aim was to empower community members while giving people power over telling their own tales - their work has since been recognized by multiple organizations such as The New York Times and ACLU.

Kalyn and Melissa Sanchez are education reporters who have won multiple awards for their coverage about the digital divide that exists in Chicago schools. They were shortlisted for the 2013 Peter Lisagor Award, which recognizes excellence in education reporting. Their investigation into police abuse in Cook County Criminal Court entitled "Abusing the Badge" was also nominated as a finalist for the 2013 Investigative Reporters & Editors Medal Award.

Karp received the Justice Leadership Award for her efforts on behalf of crack babys from Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities. This non-profit organization works to assist those who suffer from mental illness, substance abuse disorders or both get out jail and receive treatment in community services.

The future of journalism is still uncertain. In order to encourage innovation and not only support one model, journalism supporters need to adopt an inclusive approach that encourages all types of innovation. This involves investing in business operations to lower running costs of newsrooms while creating additional sources of revenue, supporting leadership success through coaching entrepreneurs and executives, incentivizing partnerships that foster quality news coverage across cities, and incentivizing partnerships and collaborations that foster fuller coverage of issues relevant to them.
